The Story

Sold

This ultra low time original bike has been disassembled, its frame repainted, and seat recovered. Fenders, tank, side panels, shocks, wheels, forks, motor, etc. are all original. The motor was professionally disassembled, inspected & rebuilt w/new rings, bearings & primary chain, seals and gaskets.  The bike is fitted with a 32mm Amal that shows no wear. The tires are new Michelins along with the tubes and an RK Chain. Levers are new alloy Amal style, all cables are new, wheel bearings & brakes have also been serviced. Bike had a small mechanical problem right after it was sold new and parked in 1972. My friend found it, did the work & here it is. It was his idea that the bike would find its way back into vintage racing & its ready to race today – change the grips, levers & tires back to stock and you also have a collectible bike.

*This bike has the close ratio transmission & I have the stock front # plate & factory manual.
*This bike is classic 250 legal.
*It also has the swingarm that had the shock mounts moved a few inches forward. They said it was designed for taller riders, never knowing that they were getting more wheel travel also.
*Early AJS "Stormers" came with chrome steel rims, and later they came with Akronts.
*AJS's slogan was "Handles Better".
*A silencer has been added to make the tech guy happy.
* Stormers shift on the right side 1 up 3 down when new, but now they have been put back in the racing class they belong in.

When I decided to build a project bike, I wanted something I had not seen run competitively at the track before; something that wasn’t made for motocross – that’s why I built my 350 Duck to race Premier 500 class MX, and after 18 months we now have a finished bike.

This was no easy undertaking and with the help of Mike Green, Dave Chrone, Lynn Shoup, Bruce Kenyon, EBAY Motors, and my Chase card, we finally have a Premier Legal Bike… (I Hope).

I ran the bike it’s first time just one week before AHRMA’s opener here in Phoenix, Arizona of Feb. 2007. It was then that I discovered that the bike had the rake of Peter Fonda’s chopper. That week Bruce Kenyon said he could help me out. He re-cut the steering head and changed the angle to 28 ° and showed up with the bike late Saturday night – it looked way better – will it work?

Sunday Morning and I just barely squeak through tech (thanks Mark & Conky), and out to practice – it was slow and had the transmission of a prototype Sachs – I got through that day with leaky gas tank, sticky throttle and all…

Next we took the bike to Bike Week in Ocala, Florida March 2007. I get there and it’s pouring rain. I’m not riding my new bike in that mess… The bike then went back home with Chicago Jerry for me to ride in Texas at Diamond’s race in April – another mud bog. I did not ride, but was hired as race director for the weekend and had a great time anyway.

The next race was in So. Cal. at Comp. Edge… well here is where the s_ _ _ hit the fan and I was denied a tech sticker as a Premier bike, because I had used the rear section of a pre-70 Husky frame. So in the truck went the Ducati – no race for me… What to do?

Well after a long talk with the AHRMA rules guy Matt Hilgenberg, I was told that if I made it myself it was okay, but that I could not use any part of the Husky frame. Okay… I went home & cut all the Husky parts off and down to Davis Salvage I go to get sheet metal and some tubing. A few days later I had it all tacked up and then had it welded up again, then to the powder coater (this time in black; no silver like before.)

Now it’s July 2007 and I’m off to Mid Ohio VMD East – sure hope I can get a tech sticker!

Remember: Rules are rules. I just want to play fair.
